Solid foundation for building and shipping an app

Set this up over Christmas, when working on some prototypes for my applications. From my last projects, I've really come to love setting up my projects in a standardized manner. I'll follow the basic tutorials and docs to inform myself on React Native / Expo, meanwhile setting up my tooling.

This enables a nice jumping off point to reset to after experiments or when starting new projects.

I've chosen React Native for its ease of integration and cross-platform compatibility, and with Expo it really was a blessing - you'll have a test version on your phone within an hour.

When wanting to try WebGPU with Expo's tooling, I ran into the limits of what's possible through their phone app (which is because of the sandboxed environment), so for some features - and general dev - you'll probably need a Mac to compile. Expo offers an online build service, though you will need an Apple developer account (100 bucks per year). Luckily my family had an old Mac from 2015 which I'll set up when I have some time over the next couple of weeks. For now I'm just running it with Expo's app.

What's Included

The starter comes with all the essentials preconfigured:

  • TypeScript in strict mode for type safety
  • Jest for testing
  • ESLint & Prettier for code quality
  • Husky for git hooks
  • CI/CD with GitHub Actions
  • Handy npm scripts for linting, formatting, and type checking

Everything follows Expo guidelines, so you can start building right away without wrestling with configuration. The template uses file-based routing and even includes a reset script to get a fresh start when you're ready to move beyond the starter code.

The repo is on GitHub if you want to use it as a starting point for your own project. If you have any questions, feel free to reach out.
